Why it was that Australia a country not directly threatened by any European power and came to be involved in a war that was fought in very distant land in World War 1?

The answer relates to the concept of Imperialism. World War 1 was an imperial war. In fact, it was the last great imperial war which spelled the beginning of the end for imperialism, although it could be argued that imperialism has not completely died. Australia was an imperial colony of Great Britain, and when Great Britain went to war her colonies went too. To do nothing would be tantamount to siding with the enemy. It is a difficult thing to understand outside the context of the time, but it would not have increased one's popularity in Australia to shout out that it was Great Britain's war and that Australia should not take Great Britain's side. Even if anyone felt that way, I should think it would have been somewhat like treason to speak it aloud.
