The origin of the "Flail Tank" comes from "Hobart's funnies" developed by Major General Sir Percy Cleghorn Stanley Hobart for use on D-Day in WWII. The Flail was designed to clear a path through mined beaches by a system of rotating chains in front of a tank which detonated mines before the tank's tread reached it.
It isn't known exactly when it was invented but it was used in Egyptian times as an agricultural tool and in that time peasants used the tools as weapons in war time so its invention was within the height of the Egyptian empire and then the Romans adopted it for warfare and for the Colosseum fights and then the knights adopted and used it but throughout that whole period its been changed dramatically from a stick hanging off a stick to a pole of steel chained to a ball of steel harnessing spikes
