Jean Batten went to a'ladies college' in Auckland where she became known for ballet and piano recitals. Though later a celebrated pianist, her ambition was to fly and her hero was Charles Kingsford Smith. She persuaded her mother to take her to England at the age of 20, to learn to fly. She bought her first aircraft two years later and started making long arduous flight all over the world. She created at least 7 flying records in the next 10 years.
