Union General George Washington Cullum graduated from West point in 1833. Among the 43 graduating cadets that year, Cullum was ranked third. His most famous contribution to the war was building the fortifications for the captured Southern city of Corinth, Mississippi.

Confederate General George Washington Custis Lee graduated from West Point in 18654. He was ranked first in his class of 46 graduating cadets. He served most of the US Civil War as an assistant to Jefferson Davis. Most of his US Civil War duty was to supervise the building of fortifications around Richmond and also commanding troops assigned to protect the Confederate capitol.
