In 1492 Columbus left with three ships and the promise of a share in whatever wealth he discovered. He reached land on October 12 at an island near Cuba. Later, he made three more voyages to the Caribbean, but Columbus died in 1506 believing that he had reached India. He never sailed around the world.
Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese navigator who led a Spanish expedition to India along the western route from 1519 to 1522. Although Magellan was killed in the Philippines, he generally credited for being the first to circumnavigate the world. Eighteen of the two hundred thirty-seven original crew members completed the voyage.
Trick question. Christopher Columbus never sailed around the world -- only across the Atlantic Ocean several times. Ferdinand Magellan was the first explorer to circumnavigate the world.
