The original 13 colonies of the United States filed the famous "Declaration of Independence against Britain on July, 4 1776. The backlash resulted in a war for American Independence or "Revolutionary War" which went on for years.
British General Cornwallis surrendered his troops at Yorktown, Virginia on October 19, 1781, ending hostilities on American soil. The war did not actually end, resulting in independence until 1783, with the Treaty of Paris.
