Julius Caesar gained supreme power in 48 BC after beating Pompey in the Battle of Pharsalus. However, he still had to mop up against Cato and Gaius Pompey, and it was not until 45 BC at the Battle of Munda, that he finalized his authority. One year later he was killed. So you could say he was in power for 4 years at the most, one year at the least.

Julius Caesar gained power in 59 BC when he was elected counsul. After his counsulship he was appointed governor in Gaul for five years. However he was still politically active as this was the period of the so-called first triumvirate. The renewal of the triumvirate and the renewal of Caesar's command in Gaul followed until 49 BC when Caesar crossed the Rubicon and started the civil war. In that same year he was made dictator for the first time due to his Italian victories. When he was again elected to counsul in 48, he resigned his Dictatorship. He was reappointed dictator later in 48 BC. In 44 BC he was appointed Dictator for Life. So you could say that he held power from 59 BC to 44 BC, although some of that time he was not "officially" in power.
