Otto and Edith Frank decided to leave Germany in late 1932/early 1933. After the Nazis came to power in Frankfurt on March 13th 1933, the family decided to leave soon. Otto Frank went to Amerstdam first, in summer 1933, to set up his business and find a home. Edith and her daughters, Margot and Anne, stayed in Aachen with Edith's mother during this time. In winter 1933 Edith and Margot went to Amsterdam to join Otto. Anne came later in February 1934, after the appartment was furnished and Margot was settled in school.
Otto was liberated in Auschwitz and Edith died there. Anne and Margot were transported to Bergen-Belsen where they died in late Feb or early march

The situation in Germany had become intolerable for Jews by 1933. They were in constant fear for theri safety, and were having their businesses and other livelihoods taken away from them. Otto Frank considered several places to relocate, and chose Holland, because Holland had stayed neutral in Word War I, and that neutrality had been respected. It was not respected by Hitler, of course.
