The Alamo was not an stragetic point. James Bowie had orders to destroy the Alamo and instead he became the garrison co-commander. Only two of the fighters survived in the three day combat. Arround 200 Texians died and around 600 Mexicans died. Military strategists agree that the Alamo was not worth defending.

They wanted their independence. The Texans are the ones who started the fight because they wanted independence.

AnswerThe Texans stayed and fought for different reasons. First, they had orders from Governor Smith and the Security Council to hold off Santa Anna's forces until they got reinforcements. Secondly, they were mad. They were mad that the rest of America was neglecting them and not sending the reinforcements that they had said they would send. In a letter he sent to the "people of Texas and all Americans in the world", he said the infamous word, "Victory or Death" and pledged to "never surrender or retreat". When they did get the reinforcements, they still did not have enough to defeat Santa Anna. After this he gave up hope in his fellow Texans and then looked to the colonies for support. Travis said in a letter to a friend at one point during the siege "If my countrymen do not rally to my relief, I am determined to perish in the defense of this place, and my bones shall reproach my country for her neglect." The Texans in the Alamo did not necessarily choose to stay and fight (though from the letters and anger that is expressed through some of the men's letters it seems that way), it really just ended up that way because of the lack of support from the Texans for the soldiers stationed there. In effect, we ended up killing our own men.
