During the American Civil War, the goal of the Union forces in the Western Theater was simple: to wrest control of the Mississippi River from Confederate forces as a prelude to invasions of the Deep South. The difficult part of the task came from the many fortresses and natural barriers between the Union forces and the achievement of their goal.

The major goal of the Union during the US Civil War was to end the rebellion of the Confederate states. The Union carried out this task by using blockades on major Southern ports, capturing control of the Mississippi River, and using the army to defeat Southern forces whenever there was a conflict or battle. The Union won more battles then they lost and in four years ended the Confederacy.
