It allowed people who were not fit for government jobs to hold office. It also allowed politicians to wield an enormous amount of power, as they controlled people's jobs, and thus, income and lifestyle.

2 primary ones: 1. Hundreds of jobs changed hands every 4 or 8 years for no good reason, requiring retraining and delay; and 2. There was little guarantee that those new hirees were particularly qualified for their jobs, since the only requirement for appointment was political support of the President.

The Spoil System has made it so that elected officials can appoint their own followers. It has made it so that no one person can obtain too much power and stay in that power.
