The Aztecs made advances in art, architecture and astronomy. They built huge and unique structures and roads so that they could trade since they didn't have much wood. They also were the first to suggest the number zero. They actually invented gum, chocolate, and popcorn! Also they made calendars to know when to plant and harvest crops. The calendar was also used for religious purposes. They set dates of when to worship gods.....well something like that. They also built chinampas - floating gardens. They built an artificial garden and planted crops on them. It was pretty sweet because I think it would be much more fun to farm on a chinampa then on land. And since water was flowing through the soil there was no need to water. It's kinda' like a garden in the middle of your pool.

The Toltec Empire was the second in a series of three pre-Columbian empires located in central Mexico. It came right before the Aztec Empire. Perhaps their greatest accomplishment was that the very impressive Aztecs considered them their predecessors, both intellectually and culturally.
