The Iran-Iraq War 1980-1988, was fought primarily for control of the Persian Gulf. US Naval Forces were present there, to mediate the area; the USS Stark (FRIGATE) was struck by an Iraqi missile and nearly sank. Later the USS Vincennes shot down a Iraqi/Iranian civilian airliner by accident.

There was very little measurable impact. The flow of oil from the Persian Gulf continued and no weapons of mass destruction were used. Oil fires and an oil spill caused by Iraqi sabotage did some damage to the environment, but Iraq was thrown out of Kuwait and life continued. One impact to veterans was "Gulf War Syndrome." A veteran I spoke with believed it was caused by the pills they were required to take every twelve hours as precaution against Iraqi chemical attack.
