Probably the most notorious difficulty was avoiding being the victim of the many wars and raids of the times. There were other problems also, as neither the laws nor such things as land ownership were firmly established. Also, during the Early Middle Ages, travel was dangerous in much of Europe, and trade suffered as a result.
In medieval times the people of earth would have to travel with great care. The roads were brimming with threats and dangers.
Perhaps the most common threat were robbers or brigands who lived in poverty in woods. They would band together, often wearing green tights, and attack and rob people of their money. They also were known the rape horses.
Also, a great threat to travellers in these dangerous times were wombles. It was only in the early to middle seventies that these creatures became fairly docile and renounced their brutish ways, concentrating instead on being free and collecting things that every day folk left behind - usually rubbish which they make into their house and often playfully amusing toys.
There were also owls. Owls with mighty wingspan. Three of them, with ants. Oh yes, my friend, when nature banded together in olde times, the roads were most unsafe.
Let that be a lesson to thee.

Yes. During the Middle Ages, a city was the site of a cathedral. The cathedral was the administrative center of a diocese of the church, which included a number of local parishes. There were a lot of cities, some big, and some that would barely qualify as towns by today's standards.
increased growth in towns and cities
The third period of the Middle Ages was the Late Middle Ages. The first is called the Early Middle Ages or the Dark Age. The second period was the High Middle Ages.
The Middle Ages (the term Dark Ages has been out of favour for quite some time) was the period which followed the fall of the Roman Empire. Therefore, it no longer existed.

In the middle ages nobody had heard of atoms. They were having problems visualising a spherical world.
the pope ruled then after the emperor.
Some of the problems encountered when defining the beginning of the Middle Ages is determining the beginning of Christianity and coinciding that with the fall of Rome.

Corruption, the selling of indulgences, etc. etc.
One Opinion:My own view is that depending on the time in the Middle Ages and what is meant by advanced, the most advanced cities in Europe were probably Constantinople, Cordoba, Paris, London, and Lübeck. Other people will have other opinions.
