Severe shortages of basic items in the south: food, fuel, clothing. Starvation: Confederacy could not help the southern people at a certain point, plus the northern soldiers often pillaged any food remaining at home. Emotional distress of war: loss of loved ones in death or husband's absence from home as soldier.
Lack of food and water.Lack of good quality uniforms(to suit the weather). With few exceptions the privates had to walk everywhere they went, often they were barefooted, the higher ranking officers would have horses to ride, but not the common soldier. With the exception of when they went into winter quarters and built crude shelters they otherwise would be constantly exposed to the weather. They also endured the emotional/mental strain of long separation from family. This was compounded for many Southern soldiers because if they were from Georgia and were fighting in Virginia when Sherman destroyed much of Georgia they couldn't be there to protect or move their family. They endured the trauma of seeing friends(fellow soldiers) wounded or killed in battle and faced the same danger themselves. Most of the supply related issues(food, water, clothing, etc.) were much worse for the Southern soldiers.
Soldiers on both sides of the US Civil War faced many dangers quite common in combat. They were the targets of artillery and gunfire. Communications with their commanders were difficult. And, if they were wounded, medical care was not good.
The major hardships the Southern population had to deal with was the damages caused by the battles in the war. Most of the major battles took place within the South. This disrupted everyday life and destroyed massive amounts of property. Mainly, however, the South had a much smaller population than the North. Southern soldier deaths and wounded, caused a great deal of hardships for Southern families.
