"Ballistic" refers to something that is thrown (shooting counts as "throwing"). A ballistic object is one that rises due to energy being applied to it and then falls back in response to gravity. Since gravity does not affect forward motion (air resistance does) ballistic objects are powered through the first half of their flight and then fall into their targets.

SAMs (Surface to Air Missiles) which gained notoriety during the Vietnam War (shooting down B-52 bombers/and fighter bombers) are for air defense and are part of the air defense system; as were deployed by North Vietnam during the war. ICBMs (Inter-Continental Ballistic Missiles=Nuclear Warheads/Atomic Weapons) were to supplement or replace manned bombers which were offensive weapons (aircraft=bombers) to strike enemy cities and other targets (missile sites, sea ports, air fields, repair facilities, ammuntion depots, factories, etc.).
Pure aggression/threat. There is far more risk to the human race from atomic weapons/ballistic missiles than potential benefit.
No - ABM weapons are either high-energy weapons (particle beams or lasers), or high velocity intercept missiles that use radar tracking from several sources to lock on and intercept a ballistic missile in-flight, before it can separate its warheads.

Weapons launched (fired) from submarines include torpedoes, ballistic missiles, or cruise missiles. These are the primary weapons, and a few other options exist.
One of the was the nuke and the other major one the ballistic missile.
to ensure each side remained vulnerable to the others nuclear weapons.
Without nuclear weapons, another nation with nuclear weapons could launch an attack without worry of a retaliation. There are not that many ways of diverting a long-range ballistic missile.
The two main types of devices developed to deliver powerful nuclear weapons are ballistic missiles and bombers. Ballistic missiles are capable of delivering nuclear warheads over long distances with high precision, while bombers are aircraft designed to carry and drop nuclear bombs on target areas. These delivery systems are essential components of a country's nuclear arsenal.

There are many weapons that are considered mass weapons of warfare. Weapons of mass destruction cause great destruction and death in great numbers. Weapons such as bombs and missiles, nuclear devises and chemicals are considered weapons of mass destruction.
Inspectors in Iraq found evidence of chemical weapons, biological weapons, and ballistic missiles in violation of United Nations resolutions. They also uncovered facilities and programs designed to develop weapons of mass destruction.
