== == The St Louis sailed from Hamburg for Havanna on 13 May 1939 with 937 passangers on board. 907 of these were Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany. They all held what looked like valid entry visas (permits) issued by Cuba. Most of these visas were declared invalid by the Cuban authorities, and only 28 passengers were allowed to land. (There was a blazing row within the Cuban government as the Director of Immigration had been lining his own pocket with money he charged for entry). (Most of the refugees were hoping to spend 2-4 years in Cuba, and then go to the US when able to enter legally). There were repeated appeals to President Roosevelt and various other governments to accept the unfortunate passengers. In the end, Britain accepted 288, and France, Belgium and the Netherlands took in the rest. Those accepted by these last three countries came under Nazi control 12 months later ... Note. The assumption in the Wikipedia article that the whole saga was was deliberately masterminded by the German government is at odds with practically all other souces.
