The Dred Scott decision explicitly denied state and federal citizenship to all African-Americans and ended the "once free, always free" standard courts applied to emancipate slaves who had lived in free territory. The Court, in effect legalized slavery, which was in effect in the southern states.
That Scott could not have his freedom.
The Supreme Court decided to interpret the Constitution in the way that the Founding Fathers would originally have meant it. A man's property was sacred. Slaves were property. So slavery was legal in every state of the Union. This meant that Scott's claim to have lived on free soil was not valid.
The Court also declared that Scott had no business taking a white man to court, because a black person could not be a citizen of the USA, and therefore not eligible to sue anyone.
This verdict delighted the South as much as it infuriated Northern Abolitionists, and it raised the temperature of the whole debate.

Abolitionists were outraged by the Supreme Court's decision in the Dred Scott case, as it ruled that African Americans, whether free or enslaved, were not citizens and therefore did not have the right to sue in federal court. They saw this decision as a setback to the abolitionist movement and a reinforcement of the institution of slavery.
