The Northwest Territory was the land ceded by Virginia to the newly-created United States and basically extended west from Pennsylvania's western border and north from the Ohio River westward to the Mississippi River. It therefore included, wholly or in part, six present-day states: Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Minnesota.
The area received from Great Britain in 1783 and organized as the Northwest Territory in 1789 included what is today all of the States of Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin, most of the State of Ohio (the rest of what is now Ohio previously belonged to Connecticut), and part of the State of Minnesota.
On July 4, 1800, in preparation for Ohio's statehood, the Indiana Territory was carved out, reducing the Northwest Territory to the size of Ohio, to prepare for statehood. The Northwest Territory went out of existence when Ohio was admitted as a state on March 1, 1803
The Northwest Territory was acquired on July 13, 1787. It continued to be identified as the Northwest Territory until March 1, 1803 when it was admitted into the Union as the state of Ohio. The Northwest Ordinance was established in 1787 to run the territory and establish rules for statehood.
