Answer:
Patrick Henry affirmed: "It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religions, but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ. For this very reason peoples of other faiths have been afforded asylum, prosperity and freedom of worship here."
The answer above is completely wrong and arrogant.
"The colonists who came to the New World were from a variety of different social and religious groups who settled in different locations on the seaboard. The Dutch of New Netherland, the Swedes and Finns of New Sweden, the Quakers of Pennsylvania, the Puritans of New England (later called "Yankees"), the English settlers ofJamestown, and the "worthy poor" of Georgia, and others-each group came to the new continent for different reasons and created colonies with distinct social, religious, political and economic structures"
To say that only Christians came to the colonies is ignorance. Many people of many opinions founded our country. Many of our founding farther's understood the difference between being a American and a Christian, and many were opposed to it.
but in the end the victors write history. The Colonists were prodistants trying to get religious freedom from the Roman Catholic Church but when thay got here other branches of prodistants poped up.
Most of the New England colonists belonged to extreme Protestant groups, sometimes called Puritans because they wanted their religion to be "pure" and not tainted by contact with the Church of England or Roman Catholic faiths. The law in England at that time did not allow them to worship in the way they wanted to, so they decided to start a new life in a new country, with religious freedom.
They were Puritans. "Like the Pilgrims, the Puritans were English Protestants who believed that the reforms of the Church of England did not go far enough. In their view, the liturgy was still too Catholic. Bishops lived like princes. Ecclesiastical courts were corrupt. Because the king of England was head of both church and state, the Puritans' opposition to religious authority meant they also defied the civil authority of the state. In 1630, the Puritans set sail for America. Unlike the Pilgrims who had left 10 years earlier, the Puritans did not break with the Church of England, but instead sought to reform it. Seeking comfort and reassurance in The Bible, they imagined themselves re-enacting the story of the Exodus. Like the ancient Israelites, they were liberated by God from oppression and bound to him by a covenant; like the Israelites, they were chosen by God to fulfill a special role in human history: to establish a new, pure Christian commonwealth." from 3.nd.edu
