So they starved the first winter they were there. Later, John Wolfe came and made them all work harder so they would be prepared for winter, but they still had high death rates the next winter.
Plus, the land around Jamestown was swampy and full of mosquitoes that carried disease. It was never a really a great settlement to live in, but it did start convincing England to give people charters of the American territory, and that started the colonies.
