The South Viet Army, Marine Corps, Navy, and Air Force, were equipped and trained in the image of their US counterparts. The South Vietnamese forces had F5 jet fighters, A1 Skyraider fighter bombers, 0-1 Bird Observation artillery adjusting airplanes, hundreds of assorted helicopters, over 1,200 artillery pieces, about 400 riverine boats, 250 light tanks, and approximately 100 Patton medium gun tanks. Not to mention every man armed with the latest M16 rifle.
With the above stated force, the South Vietnamese government was expected to carry on as the US had done previous to re-deployment; search and destroy all communist forces.
That was the plan.
What happened was, Congress cut the funds. They perceived that the country was weary of fighting the war, and US support was withdrawn. All of those artillery pieces, tanks, and jets ran out of gas and ammo. That's when the North overran the South.

The government of South Vietnam was never able to defend themselves, and President Gerald R. Ford finally gave up on them in 1975. They soon fell to communist North Vietnam.
Vietnamization was part of President Nixon's plan for "Peace with Honor" by training, equipping, and then turning the full responsibility of defending South Vietnam to South Vietnam's military units.
