The event was the TET Offensive of 1968. The plan was for communist forces to attack every province in South Vietnam simultaneously on January 30 of that year - during the Chinese New Year celebration called Tet.
The idea was to encourage the South Vietnam people to make an uprising against the government to help the North reunify Vietnam.
The result was far different. A small squad did make it inside the U.S. Embassy compound in Saigon, but were then all killed. Other attacks met with the same overwhelming response.
The exception was Ho Chi Minh's childhood city of Hue. The university town with a population over 100,000 at the time was held by North Vietnam forces for about three weeks before U.S. Marine and Army troops fought door to door to remove the occupying force.
The reason that american soldiers attitude changed was because they were attacked. Unlike WW1 Korea and Vietnam were they were drawn into the conflict, pearl harbour was a sneak attack on the US, a low blow or cheap shot if you will. This filled americans with anger and made them unite.
