Much like Communism and Socialism, Feudalism looks great on paper, but doesn't work out so well in practice. The strong points for this form of societal organization were found in the hierarchy. The Lords (nobles who owned vast amounts of land) provided homes and farms for the Serfs (common men and women), and saw to their protection. The Serfs cared for the land, raised food for the Lords and Vassals (more commonly known today as knights), and paid taxes out of their livestock, produce and money earned through commerce. Vassals swore themselves to the service of the Lords, and in exchange for small parcels of their own land, protected the land of the Lord they served.
It made possible a system of central Government and cohesion within many newly formed States, despite the often necessary delegation of power to many local nobles. The reason was that the feudal system was based on the firm belief by both sides in the feudal system, that any gift of office or land accepted from a 'liege lord', mostly the king, entitled him to the unswerving loyalty and service when required of those nobles.
