In the context of World War I and the years preceding it, the main purpose of the alliance system was to prevent general war among European nations. While there were also trade and diplomatic (among other) benefits to the system, its basic goal was to deter competitor-nations from daring to start a war, since they would be sure to face not just one but a whole alliance of opponents.
