Well, as weapons. In order to kill a knight in armour a long thin dagger was used, that was able to wedge into the weak spots in their body armour and possibly pierce a vital chest organ.

it was used for your left hand to stab the person you were fighting. while the rapier is in your right hand trying to fight them off.

Daggers were in use everywhere. A dagger is just another knife and most medieval men would carry one.
