The printing press with movable type made printing books cheaper. Before books were hand copied, one at a time. The production rate of books went up.

the lower class, peasants, had access to books and could learn to read and write and move up in society.

Before the lower class could be cheated or led on by those who could write. For example, priests could teach anything from the pulpit and the peasants wouldn't know. They didn't have their own books to check. If the peasants could read, they wouldn't be cheated or lied to.

Literacy spread.

The affect of Johannes Gutenberg's invention of movable type printing, was enormous. One could even say that Gutenberg is one of the people with the most influence in human history because of this invention. His invention of the printing press used one piece of type for each letter, so that the type could be reused after a page was printed. Because of this, books could be printed in mass quantities, which would eventually enable people from all over the world to read and/ or spread their word.
