The principal handicaps facing the Allies in the days following D-Day came from a shortage of landing and ferry ships needed for supplies. Germen mines had caused the lost of many smaller supply vessels. Supply vessels were hampered by rough seas, mechanical failures and German attacks on allied ships in the English Channel. The expected number of supply ships to help on the French coast were about 50% less then what was needed.
