I'm pretty sure they did; it was just they used a different type of glass for it and you couldn't see through it well. Then they changed the type of glass and liked it, and that's what we have today.

Stained Glass was made by ironed metallic oxide salt were added into the mix wich was used to color it! Gold would create a red shape copper would create a grennish-blue and so on and so on
