He had several issues to overcome, but at the time most voters were worried about his being a catholic. The Rep. party started many wispher campaigns about his having to take 'orders' from the Pope. None of it was true. His family wealth was also an issue. Not only his personal wealth, but the way his father had made much of it. Politics have always been 'dirty', but this was the dawn of a new age and era when we needed to face real issues and problems--sadly, we the voters, did not. Many people believe Kennedy was the last of our "Best and Brightest" men who sought to improve the plight of the underprivileged and poor. Men and women who entered politics to improve the world, and the lives of all. People who were well enough off that they didn't have to do anything with their lives--but choose to try and improve the world--starting in the US.
