In 1781, during what turned out to be the decisive (and final) major battle of the Revolutionary War, Lord Cornwallis and his large army were trapped at Yorktown through a dual movement by his American and French opponents. First, the ground troops hotly pursued and then deftly surrounded Cornwallis in what he thought would be a defensible position at Yorktown.
