Caligula (Gaius) died of stab wounds from his Praetorian Guards. They crowded around him in a narrow passageway as he was leaving the arena, leaving no room for his personal bodyguards to defend him. He was the first Roman emperor to be assassinated and his murder was the first in which the Praetorians exerted their power.
