More freedom: people could talk freely without worrying about getting into trouble (using certain words); could ride motorcycles & bicycles without wearing helmets...and no motorcycle license was required...just a driver's license. Could smoke anywhere you wanted, restaurants, stores, at work, on school grounds, in offices. Could carry a loaded firearm in public...as long as it wasn't concealed (until the Black Panthers walked into the California Capital in the 60's, then they made a law against it). Could drive a car without a seat belt (without losing your license, which today you can...points). You could homestead (BLM) land for FREE, just file a claim and show progress after a year living there; PUBLIC LAND meant it was YOUR LAND! After 1977 that became illegal. You could drive ANY motor vehicle on public land without an off road permit...because it was your land...today that's a federal offense. State parks and beaches were free; camping was free; and they had trash cans. Today they almost all require fees and YOU pack your own trash out.
And back in those days, the hippies called the place a "police state."
