Many types of games were played, mostly at the expense of the players. Usually, the players were prisoners of war forced into combat with each other or vicious beasts (think lions). Normally, the games were more bloodfests for the amusement of the violence-loving crowds than actual games. Victory would lead a gladiator to live one more day, but losing almost always ended in death. Take the chariot races, for example. The norm would be to take the loser and tie him to the back of the winner's chariot, then literally pull him to death around the ring, mangling his body so everyone would know that he'd lost.
The Colosseum is a nickname for Falvian Amphitheatre (Amphitheatrum Flavium). Amphitheatres were arenas for gladiatorial games.
The gladiatorial combats were one part of the gladiatorial games, which lasted the whole day or several days. Although they were the highlights, they were part of a range of entertainments The schedule of the day, which stared at 8 am and ended at dusk was:
Displays of exotic animals
Animal hunts which replicated hunting scenes
Comic acts with clowns and dwarfs
Acrobatic and gymnastic acts
Tightrope walking
Music and dances
Animal acts similar to those at the circus
Tortures and executions
Boxing
Martial fights
Gladiatorial fights which were the highlight of the day
The Romans had various types of ball games, however we only have a foggy idea of the rules. There was one ball game called "harpasticum" which was a rigorous, rough and tumble type. There were varieties of games where the players formed a circle and passed the ball rapidly around the circle and anyone could change directions of the pass at any time. There was a game where one player was in the center of a circle and tried to grab the ball from the other players who were passing it around. Handball was extremely popular. Another game called "trigon' was played with three players in a triangle formation. Undoubtedly Field Hockey was played as the Egyptians played it as early as 2800 BC and the Greeks borrowed it from them, then the Romans borrowed it from the Greeks.

The Colosseum became popular after it's construction because it was used as a giant theater where large public entertainment was held. Such entertainment were bloody gladiatorial battles and other bloody sports like public executions.
When it was completed in 80 CE during the reign of the emperor Titus, it was known as the Flavian ampitheatre. The Flavians were the imperial dynasty ruling at the time, referring to Titus (79-81), his father, the emperor Vespasian (69-79), and Titus' brother and successor, the emperor Domitian (81-96).
