Sadly the Great Plains no longer exist today, but 300 years ago they were a million square miles of not much more than grassland. Anyone attempting to "live off the land" in that environment would very soon starve to death. Instead, the Plains tribes depended entirely on constantly moving herds of deer, pronghorn antelope and buffalo (bison) - it was these grazing animals that lived off the land, efficiently converting plants into meat. It was this meat that provided over 90% of the diet of Plains tribes and the reason that they had to live nomadic, hunting lifestyles. Only a tiny fraction of the diet was made up of plant foods such as wild carrot, wild turnip, berries and wild plums. Many of these were only available for a short time each year.
