Religion was a very important cause of the English Civil War. The English lower classes were largely Protestant. They despised the excess, wealth and greed that permeated the Catholic faith in England. The King and many of his nobles, however, were Catholic. This caused tension between the two faiths.
The majority of the English People were Anglicans and belonged to the Church in England that had lasted some 1600 years. It was when the Calvinist controlled parliament attempted to take over the Church and abolish the Bishops that the Church people rallied to the support of Charles the First and defended for several years the Body of Christ!
Though the Calvinists and Puritans won , with the aid of Scots Presbyterians and abolished the C.of E, their own Church lasted only as long as the army defended it. In the end it fell down of its own weight because the Anglicans preferred to stay at home and they , the faithful, brought the restoration of the Church by themselves!
