Andrew Jackson was the orphan son of immigrant parents with little education and lived on the frontier. As a result he and his supporters were regarded as barbarians by the old guard who had ruled the country until he took office. When he took office he replaced most of the government workers with his supporters, the so-called spoils system. He fought to stop the renewal of the charter for the bank of the US. His cabinet and their wives had a dispute over Mrs. Eaton. His Indian policy was attacked. His fought South Carolina over the right of nullification , particularly over federal tariffs. The Senate at one point passed a vote of censure against him.
