The Romans had the basic domestic type pets the same as us. They tolerated cats and the cats tolerated them. They definitely had dogs but many of their dogs were working dogs such as guard dogs, hunting dogs, and patrol dogs. The Romans seemed to be very fond of birds as pets as there are many mentions of birds both in poetry and in prose.

The Romans did indeed keep dogs as pets. They were used much in the same ways we would use dogs in today's world. That is: hunting, guarding, and companionship; and other not so common ways such as keeping their master warm at night.

Yes- there are known cases of Romans owning pets, especially dogs. In the city of Pompeii, there were remains of dogs found alongside their owners. They were often owned to protect the home and family, and little dogs were sometimes owned by posh rich ladies, similar to today.

They also had cats, but they were less popular. Cats were only kept in houses where bread was often baked, to keep mice out of the flour.
