The Continental Congress created a draft committee consisting of John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Robert R. Livingston, and Roger Sherman. However, the actual writing of the Declaration of Independence was performed by Jefferson alone.
The men who assisted Jefferson with writing the Declaration of Independence were John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Robert R. Livingston and Roger Sherman. They were appointed by the Continental Congress to do the work and were known as the Committee of Five. In actuality, Jefferson wrote the entire first draft and Adams and Franklin made minor changes to it. There is no evidence that Livingston and Sherman did anything to help write it or change it before it was presented to Congress for review.
