It was an important part of greek life because it had the art and practices of the government. Polis gave rise to the term politics and it was the framework of Greek Life. Each city-state had a different kind of government.

Athens' government changed over time. Up until 508/7, Athens was a tyranny. Cleisthenes introduced democracy but Athens then became an Oligarchy under the aristocrats who led the city to ward off the Persian invasion. 460 CE Ephialtes reintroduced democracy, was assassinated for this, and his deputy Pericles took over to complete Athenian democracy. It was a direct democracy by the people, unlike the representative democracy of today. Then it was conquered by Alexander and etcetera etcetera.

Each independent city-state had its own government comprising a council which carried out government functions and an assembly of the people which voted on issues put before it by the council. On top of this was a petty king, who ruled with advice from the council.
The Sumerians are often credited with the invention of government. In addition to the king or leader, each city-state had government officials who kept things organized and essentially ran the city.

Socrates was from ancient Athens, which was a city-state known for its democratic government. He lived during a time when Athens was experimenting with democracy and participating in civic life was important for its citizens.
