As a Radical Republican during the post Civil War period he pushed for stern and even extreme requirements for the former Rebel States to be readmitted to the Union. He made every effort to obtain rights, social justice and privileges for the freed slaves, just as he had fought for the rights of the American Indians, women, Chinese and all manner of religious freedom. Although he had tested the waters of most of the established political parties in his earlier years, he used almost tyranical effort in the US House to punish the South. The Fourteenth Amendment and the 1867 Reconstruction Act are largely attributed to his oratory and leadership.
