The medieval English surname Osburn is one of ancient 'Viking' origins. The modern surname derives from the Norse personal name 'Asbiorn', meaning 'god' and 'Bjorn', - the bear. The Vikings often chose names which indicated strength. The name was found in England before the Norman Conquest of 1066. In the Olde English pre 11th Century the spelling was 'Osbern' and this spelling is recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book. Later church recordings include Robert Osburn of Yorkshire, in 1570. One of the earliest settlers in America was Jenkin Osborne of Virginia, in February 1623. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Henry Osbern, dated 1260, during the reign of King Henry 111.
