The Last Frontier is the official nickname in Alaska.
Alaska is called the last frontier because although the state is inhabited by people, there are parts of the state that still remain unexplored. These areas have not been mapped or charted in an accurate way.

It's called the last frontier because of its distance from the other states in North America and its also because its not fully explored yet.
Alaska
The official state nickname is "The Last Frontier". The official state motto is 'North to the Future". Alaska has several informal nicknames. It's also often called "The Great Land" by Alaskans. It's also called "The Land of The Midnight Sun". Alaska was at one time called "Seward's Folly", although, as all of us Alaskans know, that nickname is not fitting.
It is called Earth's last frontier because there are newly-discovered life forms thriving near them, and the areas have not been thoroughly examined- yet.
