I don't know that if this will help you or not but my father is from Barcelona, Spain and he speaks Catalan which is like saying someone speaks proper English instead of plain old English [NOT EXACTLY. CATALAN IS A DIFFERENT LANGUAGE]. In the US there are so many different types of Hispanics or Latinos here you are sure to have tons of different dialects. For instance a word that a Mexican person would use means something quite different to a Spaniard or even a Puerto Rican and visa versa. Just like something a northerner would say would sound odd to a southerner so is the difference between Spain's Spanish and America's Spanish. As well as different "slang" and different uses of words I believe it's just in the choosing of the words and the application of them. In regards to the Spanish you learn at school in the US it is I believe based on the "proper" Spanish. Catalan is almost a mix of Spanish and French [EDIT: IT IS A SEPARATE ROMANCE LANGUAGE]. "True" Spanish is spoken in Spain almost at all, not only Madrid. Most of Spain and Argentina speak "European" Spanish, aside from the accents, and slang which was mentioned above another major difference is the use of vos. Which is the second person plural (You all). It is basically only used in Argentina. In Spain it is not used.

Yes, between 60-80% of the Mexican population are Mestizos, people of mixed European ("White") and Native American background. The Mestizo statistic however, does not include all full blood natives who speak Spanish and do not live in indigenous communities: the Native American, or Amerindian population ranges from 10% to 30% of the Mexican population (between 11 and 34 million in 2010) and such people are the pure descendants of Native American peoples who inhabited Mexico before the arrival of Europeans during the 16th century.
