Society" -- especially modern/industrial, or lately, postmodern society (as opposed to pre-modern society, which is usually the province of anthropologists) -- is the playing field of sociologists and of sociology.
There are several conceptions of the term "society". In general terms, we think of "society" as a grouping of human beings bound by some criteria -- race, ethnicity, culture, etc. Whatever the criteria may be, the constant factor is the presence of human beings. Sociologists (and other guys) can play around with this general understanding, maybe add some more limiting factors or definitions that suit their purposes.
