Selection is when the the SS doctors and Dr. Mengele choose who will be thrown into the furnace and who will continue to live. This, of course, was during the Holocaust in Western Europe.
Here is a list of some things that Elie's Blockalteste told him to do to avoid being selected:
1) move around to give some color to his skin
2) run as fast as possible to avoid his identification number being written down
3) do not look afraid
4) do not look at the SS officers (avoid eye contact)

Elie's father acts to prevent the liquidation of the camp in night chapter 7-9 by persuading Elie to stay in the infirmary during the selection process. He tells the SS officers that Elie is sick and unable to move, which ultimately saves Elie from being sent to the gas chambers.
