Standing on the balcony outside his room on April the 4Th 1968 at 6:01PM, Martin was shot by James Earl Ray. The shooter, aged 40, was sentenced to 99 years in prison; he died under a third of the way through on April the 23rd 1998.

With Martin on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel, Memphis, Tennessee, where he'd nearly died before, were Reverend Jesse Jackson, Hosea Williams and Ralph Abernathy. They called an ambulance and Martin got rushed to Saint Joseph's Hospital. At 7:05PM Martin Luther King Junior's assassination was confirmed.

However, his family continued to argue that James Earl Ray did not kill him. Later evidence found him guilty but he was forced into the attack by the white government.
