There are many basic rights that were granted to the citizens in the Bill of Rights. After the Constitutional Convention, the Federalists finally agreed to add a the list of amendments to the new constitution. The first ten amendment were called the Bill of Rights, and they list the rights guaranteed to all United States citizens. The First Amendment guaranteed the people's rights to religion, speech, and the press. It also states that the citizens may peacefully gather to discuss important issues. They are also allowed to petition and formally ask the government to correct something that is wrong. People can freely express their ideas. Some amendments give people who are accused of crime to the right to a speedy and public trial by jury. People and their belongings are also protected against unreasonable searches and seizures by the government, so when officials look through citizens' houses or take away their properties, they must have a good reason to do so.
