I serf and peasant differ. They were both social class in the the feudal class system. Serfs were literally slaves who worked the land they were bound to by where their owner resided. A peasant was a person of social status equivalent to a commoner. Keep in mind, a commoner back in the feudal age is much different than a commoner today, as there was no middle class. Unlike serfs, peasants were not owned, but they did not usually own their own land.
