Rome was on the Seven Hills of Rome which originally had independent settlements and then became unified. The Capitoline, Qurinal, Viminal, Esquiline, Caelian and Aventine hills formed (and still do) a C shape around a central hill, the Palatine. These hills were made of tuff, a volcanic rock. Between the hills there three valleys: the valley of the Forum, the Velabrum and the Murcia Valley. To the north there was a flat area (the Campus Matius) where Rome expanded into. The city also expanded into other nearby hills.
